Why YOU Should Do Your First Competition: Advice from a Non-Competitor

I didn't want to do girls gone RXd.  I had no idea what I was doing. In fact, at one point I remember looking at Amon and mouthing, “I have no idea what I’m doing…”

But it was the best thing I’ve done since starting CrossFit.  I think everyone should do it and here’s why:

Reason #1: You’ll be amazed at what your body can do!

When it comes to competing, you get to test your level of strength and work towards your PR goals (or discover them). You’re also running off of adrenaline from the crowd cheering you on, seeing other competitors and the hard work everyone puts in for each wod. This will motivate you to push through and to use maximum effort for each set.

I won’t lie it’s nerve racking and there’s a ton of reasons you’ll think you can’t do it.  But you’re wrong. If I can do it, anyone can do it.

Reason #2: You’ll really experience the DCF community

As cliche as it sounds, you get to make new friends and feel even more a part of the DCF community. During everyday WOD’s, you’re with your group for just an hour, and then you’re out the door. During competitions you have more time to get to know your teammates and discover their strengths. It’s motivating for me to see what others can do from our gym and that’s something you can only discover during competitions.

I always thought the way people talked about community was kinda creepy.  Very cult-ish. But it’s not that. It’s just a group of awesome people and it’s really a group of friends.  If you want more friends, there’s just no better way to meet the awesome people at DCF than to try a comp with the team.

Reason #3: Your body will thank you later

Why do we work out in the first place? To stay in shape, duh? :) Competitions will have your body crying once it’s over, because you pushed yourself during each event! However, once you recover the next day, you’ll enter the gym stronger, better, and with a new attitude. Plus, all your hard work will be seen through your arms and legs! That’s when your body is saying thank you.

Usually, competing makes me nervous and at the time, I wasn’t aware of my own potential strength. However, this competition put things in perspective for me. It gave me a pathway for goal setting. It also empowered me to keep going and to push myself everyday, like aiming for the Rx weight, or staying after class to work on kipping pull-ups or double-unders.

Girls goneRx gave me the results I was looking for in CrossFit and I can’t wait to sign up for the next one!
